Monday June 18 | ONE HOUR OF MADNESS AND JOY: Walt Whitman in Song

Walt Whitman’s words have been a creative inspiration for composers across the globe. In this evocative program, VISI showcases musical settings of Whitman, that "democratic poet" who sang of himself, his community and his young, optimistic country in an exuberant poetic voice that continues to influence us today. Includes songs by Ned Rorem, Leonard Bernstein, and Canadian composer James Rolfe. The program concludes with "Walt Whitman in 1989" from The AIDS Quilt Songbook, which invokes Whitman's presence on a more contemporary battlefield.
