CANADA HERE AND NOW
An extraordinary gathering of Canadian musicians kick off VISI’s
opening concert with an all-Canadian program. Featuring the world premiere
of The First Woman, a song cycle by composer Leslie Uyeda and
poet Lorna Crozier. Also includes Halifax 6 December 1917, Clifford
Ford’s
song cycle about the historic explosion.

Professor Ellen Dissanayake, internationally renowned
author of “Homo Aestheticus,” is sought-after as a speaker
around
the
world for her perspectives on the global phenomenon of artistic
expression. She will speak about the natural inclination of the human
species to sing, from lullabies to laments to laudations.

SHEER TIRELESS FAITH: Songs of Catharsis and Healing
A special concert in conjunction with the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced
Studies symposium on Art Song, this program presents songs that address
the struggle, faith, and love with which we cope with illness and loss.
Includes solos, duets, and trios from Ned Rorem’s compelling cycle
Evidence of Things Not Seen, as well as Chris de Blasio’s affecting
song “Walt Whitman in 1989” from The AIDS Quilt Songbook.
*The concert follows a free public lecture with Professor and renowned author Ellen Dissanayake entitled” Homo Musicus: Where Song Begins.”
