Guest Artists and Speakers: Mel Braun

Baritone Mel Braun is a versatile singer, equally at home on the concert or opera stage. His performances of Bach, Handel, Purcell, and Monteverdi have been heard throughout Canada, especially his Christus in the St. Matthew Passion. He has been equally active in New Music, with numerous operatic and concert premieres to his credit. As a recitalist, he has been particularly acclaimed for his performances of Schubert, Wolf, and English Art Song. An innovative teacher, he heads up the voice department at the Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, where he directs the Opera Workshop and conducts the Cantata Singers. In 2002, he founded the Contemporary Opera Lab and the Opera Apprenticeship. Mr. Braun also serves as vocal coach to a number of young rock bands that are part of Winnipeg's burgeoning indie music scene.
