VISI Faculty: Phoebe MacRae

Phoebe MacRae Canadian soprano Phoebe MacRae enjoys a busy and varied musical career. She is sought after for her work in opera, chamber music, oratorio and recital presentation. With a repertoire from the 17th to the 21st century she has performed across Canada and is frequently heard on regional and national CBC radiobroadcasts.

She has been a featured soloist with such companies and organisations as Pacific Opera Victoria, Modern Baroque Opera, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Vancouver New Music, Festival Vancouver and the Symphonies of Nova Scotia, Victoria and Vancouver.

Operatic roles include Iris in the Canadian premiere of Lee Hoiby’s The Tempest, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Konigin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, Arsena in Der Zigeunerbaron, and the title role of Telemann’s dramatic cantata Ino. Phoebe also created the role of Pélagie in world premiere of 120 Songs for the Marquis de Sade, by Peter Hannon and Peter Hinton.

Oratorio repertoire includes Handel’s The Messiah and Israel in Egypt, Haydn’s The Creation, Bach’s Johannes-Passion, Monteverdi’s Vespers and Orff’s Carmina Burana. She has twice been the guest soloist on Pacific Baroque Orchestra’s tours of Western Canada. On the recital stage Phoebe has performed for the Regina Musical Society, Winnipeg’s Virtuosi Concerts, Victoria Summer Music Festival and on tour throughout BC.

Phoebe was an artistic associate of the Modern Baroque Opera Company, a founding member of the Vancouver based Song Circle and, together with Soprano Karen Ydenberg, Phoebe was a creator and is codirector of the Classical Comedy Duo LEAVE IT TO DIVA.

Phoebe holds a Master of Music in Opera degree from the University of BC and has obtained further training at the Queen of Puddings’ Artist Training Program in Toronto, Aspen Opera Theatre Centre, Vancouver Early Music Programme, and the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts.
