CHORAL ADVENTURE

Art Song goes Choral! – A choral intensive with Kevin Zakresky June 10-13

Apply to participate in a choral adventure with Kevin Zakresky in celebration of the 100th Birthday of American composer Samuel Barber, creator of some of the 20th century’s most glorious song. Take several evenings to enjoy some shared singing and the dynamic musicianship, humour, and energy of our resident choral conductor in the study and performance of some masterpieces of choral song.

Join us at VISI for lectures about the poetry of Barber’s songs with UBC professors, audit masterclasses with distinguished visiting artists, and hear from Barber’s biographer, Ms. Barbara Heyman, who will visit from New York.

Samuel Barber: Art Song Goes Choral (A Weekend Workshop)
The goal of this workshop will be to expose amateur singers to the choral works of Samuel Barber in a way that focuses on interpreting texts as a group.  Barber’s choral works include SATB works with piano and without, as well as transcriptions of his own solo art songs.

The weekend will include rehearsals and discussions held on the weekend of Thursday June 10th to Sunday June 13th.  Besides singing through many choral works by Samuel Barber, participants are invited to attend two VISI concerts as well as a lecture by Barbara Heyman, world-renowned biographer of Barber. See below for details.

The Barber Choral Workshop is open to amateur singers or professional musicians who have some choral experience and who are able to sight-read moderate to difficult choral music.
